Sen. Portman finally breaks his silence on TrumpCare…

As one citizen observed, TrumpCare is more like a “wealth care” bill instead of a health care bill… hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts for the top one percent, financed on the backs of children, the elderly, poor, and disabled in the form of steep cuts to Medicaid.

For the past week, you’ve been calling, emailing, visiting, and tweeting at Senator Portman, expressing your outrage and concern about the bill. All your hard work paid off!

Yesterday, Sen. Portman finally came out in opposition to TrumpCare. “I continue to have real concerns about the Medicaid policies in this bill, especially those that impact drug treatment at a time when Ohio is facing an opioid epidemic,” Portman said in a written statement released yesterday. He added that he is committed to working with his colleagues to fix the problems in the current health care system “while protecting Ohio’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Also yesterday, Mitch McConnell– realizing he didn’t have the votes–announced that the Senate would not be voting on the health care bill before the July 4th recess. The bill that McConnell wrote in secret and tried to ram through the Senate before opposition could build has been held up by you and other concerned constituents. Way to go!

However, we can’t stop working now!

Recall that the House bill was originally pulled from the floor, but was revived and eventually passed. The same thing can happen with the Senate version. The President has already met with GOP Senators at the White House to begin applying pressure to them. No doubt Mitch McConnell will be working furiously behind the scenes to try to sweeten the pot for specific Senators.

Let Sen. Portman know that no matter how much lipstick they put on this pig, it’s still a pig and he should not vote for it!

The Plan: We must use this recess to kill TrumpCare once and for all!

  1. Keep up the calls, emails, and tweets!

Constituent feedback is very effective, especially if you can include a personal story. If you, a family member, or friend have benefited from the ACA or would be hurt by its repeal, share your experience with Sen. Portman.

  1. Educate your friends and family about what the GOP bill would do and urge them to visit, call and email Sen. Portman as well.

Please visit https://www.trumpcareten.org/ohio/ for call scripts specific to Ohio and Sen. Portman!

Join us as we visit Sen. Portman’s Columbus office next Wednesday, July 5 at 10 a.m. Please RSVP by texting Pamela Dixon at 937-869-0289.

  1. Submit your amendment!

Republicans must allow an unlimited number of amendments when they bring TrumpCare to the floor. Democrats plan to delay a vote by submitting tens of thousands of them. To submit yours, please fill out the short form on the www.ouramendments.org website.

The Senate delay is a huge setback but it is not a nail in the coffin. Make sure your Senators hear from you this recess. Together, we can defeat this bill once and for all.
