A Bill So Bad, Even the Bully-In-Chief Calls it “Mean”…

This is it, folks. The battle we have been waging to save the ACA and defeat Trump#Care will be won or lost in the next few weeks. This week, the Senate is putting finishing touches on a health care bill so terrible they don’t even have the nerve to release it to the public. We need all hands on deck! We know you’re tired, frustrated, and overwhelmed. But we need you to be strong and join us in this final push to save health care!

The strategy

A focused, two-week long mini-campaign to apply maximum pressure on Sen. Portman to vote NO on the Senate’s TrumpCare legislation

Time frame

The next two weeks, June 19- July 3rd

An all-male working group is currently in secret negotiations behind closed doors, finishing up their version of Trump Care. It will then be sent to the CBO for scoring, and Mitch McConnell hopes to have it up for a vote before the July 4th recess. Alarmingly, they have not released the text of the bill to the public or even their fellow Senators (Republican or Democrat!).

What are we asking of Sen. Portman?

Simply put, we are asking Sen. Portman to put the interests of his constituents above the interests of his political party! It’s more important to protect the health care of Ohioans than giving Trump a political win!

Ask Sen. Portman to commit to voting NO on…

  • any bill that will result in anyone losing coverage
  • any bill that doesn’t protect people with pre-existing conditions from seeing higher premiums
  • any bill that eliminates funding for Medicaid, regardless of the timetable

Also, we need to ask Sen. Brown to withhold consent on all Senate business until the GOP agrees to hold a public hearing on Trump Care. Washington, DC: 202-224-2315  Columbus: 614-469-2083.

Tactics

Letters, emails, and phone calls: Please refer to the handout for your daily action item for the coming week. Also, the Indivisible Guide has launched a new toolkit to fight TrumpCare in ten critical states. Ohio is one of them! Go to TrumpCareTen.org for stats, facts, and call scripts specific to Ohio.

Office Visits: We will caravan to Sen. Portman’s Columbus office on Monday, June 19 and Friday, June 23. We will depart at 9:30 a.m. Folks in the county can meet in the Park N’ Ride lot on State Route 54, next to the Fuel Mart in South Vienna. City folks can meet in the City Hall lot on the corner of Fountain Ave. and Columbia St. If people want to carpool, that’s great!

Columbus office address: 37 West Broad Street, Columbus. There is a parking garage right next door.

We will meet on the front steps of the office around 10:45 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on both days.
